When your buddy is a penguin

There are people out there who get crazy about penguins.penguin.jpg My best friend’s mother, who took us to the Aquarium to see penguins, found out my son named a penguin balloon Toni in her honor. Overjoyed, Grandma Toni hit up the Penguin Place in Brooklyn, NY, to get him another penguin.

And another. And another. They have hundreds to choose from.

Years later, those penguins still hold their shape even after going through the wash a few times. They’re still soft, and the kids still sleep with them.

The most loved of the bunch is this guy, Pinky, with his Ice House. He’s $19.95, and squeaks when you squeeze him, even after bedtime accidents afforded him a few trips through the wash. His igloo is stitched so it looks ice blocks, and the base is of solid cardboard that really holds its shape. Ours is still white, even after a few coats of raspberry jam that were easily cleaned off with soap and water.

What I liked most about Pinky — we call him Baby Toni and his Home — is that he had a place to go at night. That started off our kids on the idea of putting toys away at night. And for that, we’ll always be grateful to Grandma Toni.
