Garden clogs that survive the snow

When I saw them, I thought A) I like green and B) rubber clogs would be better to garden in than bare feet, especially when the brick borders to the garden get hot.

So I took a chance and bought these clog-shaped Sloggers two years ago. They’re sized a little small, so I went for one size bigger. They came with a black felt insert that didn’t last very long, but I’ve got to tell you, otherwise these shoes are the most durable piece of garden equipment I own.

In the summer, I can get them as mucked as I want and just hose them off and let them bake dry in the sun — they don’t crack. But the real test was the day I shoveled snow in them — they kept my feet warm and bone-dry — and then I left them outside. It then rained, ice filled the shoes and then they got buried and forgotten in snow for three months. My son dug them out, and after defrosting them in the sink, they were as good as new, holding the same shape, still comfortable and ready for use.

A year later, these are my actual shoes in my actual must-be-cleaned-up garden.

Not bad for a $17.88 investment.

Just do take my advice. If you’re using them to muck around the yard and you leave them outside, shake them out before you put your feet in. I’m finding caterpillars like them for protection as much as my feet do.
