An angel for your little angel

sunray.jpgThis is Sunray Bear. He’s an angel, born in an attic, and he plays with his other angel friends, which include a bunny, a cat, a dog, a pig and a mouse.

He and the other angels have sprung whole from the mind of Newton cartoonist Mark Marderosian, who has made them real so they can play with the little angel in your house.

“These stuffed animals are practically hand made; no two are alike, and this initial run is truly a limited edition,” Marderosian said.

This is a perfect way to start a 1-year-old onto the path to reading. Each animal comes with a 12-page book in clear, simple language for the youngest kids you could read to.

The animals have been safety tested — no buttons come off by chewing, no loose stitching — and the sun you see on the front of the bear’s outfit is also the same sun you’ll see stitched on his belly.

The clothes come off easily with little hands who want to play dress up, but I think the coolest things are the wings. They have bright white wings (you can see one peeking on on the left side in my photo) that are attached to the 10-inch-high bear and not the clothes — so there aren’t odd questions to answer, like you’d have with those animals with detachable wings — should you be blessed with one of those kids with 8,326 questions a day.

And if you have a web-savvy kid, try the games website created around the characters.

The animals and books are sold at the “Just Next Door” card shop in Newton’s Auburndale village, and Games & Gizmos in Newton Highlands. The “critters” as Marderosian calls them, can be had for $24.95 (that includes shipping and handling) when ordered through the website.
