Have a ball with homemade ice cream
Want to be the favorite aunt? Get them sugar. Want to be the aunt who teaches them something?
Get them these cool ice cream balls from LL Bean.
Yes, there’s science involved in ice cream. Add rock salt and ice to one end, add things like cream and blueberries to the other. Roll the ball around for 30 minutes — you can throw it back and forth with your little brother — and presto, you have ice cream. Or if your mom is like me, she’ll let you fill it with apple juice and raspberries to make sorbet. It comes with recipes, or you can experiment and come up with your own. I love that you get to eat the results.
It comes in pint size, but go ahead and splurge on the quart for $39.95. It’s not like you can’t freeze the ice cream if it’s too much.
It won’t be too much.
If you are buying for a 12-year-old boy, however, please learn from me. You want to buy blue or green. The red — cranberry — looks too close to pink, the grape is really purple, and I was told no boy that age wants to be carrying around a ball filled with yogurt in the color “tangerine.”
I think it’s cute, though. I’d buy tangerine.
