A place for everything, covered in a plague of frogs

utensil.jpgNow see, that’s what I need. A place to keep all these spoons, forks and the meat tenderizer. Our friend Wade had given us a beautiful basket about five years ago, but our kitchen utensils have outgrown the basket. I’ve been looking for a jar or something that’s big enough to keep those nice serving spoons I got for Christmas, but heavy enough that it won’t knock over when I take out a cork screw from the middle of the pile. Which is why I need this 1.5 quart jar from Monroe Salt Works. Not a bad solution at $30, no? We’ve purchased so much from Monroe Salt Works, I should have thought of them first. They’re a good company — they do things like sell extras of the lids you want and have lost. They have the nice chicken figures my husband collects, and enough dishwasher-safe moose-patterned dishes to feed the woodsy fetishes of a family member living in the woods with a dishwasher.

But when I saw this pattern with the frogs, I said “Mine!” Maybe it’s the fact that I am physically craving spring in New England. Maybe it’s the fact that no piece is going to be exactly the same. Or maybe it’s the salt glaze that’s just a little rough and feels like the earth near Penobscot Bay it came from. Or maybe that I’ve been waiting for one of their patterns to call my own.

Either way, I think this will find a nice space in my kitchen, once I’ve collected all the serving spoons that have tumbled out of Wade’s basket to fall behind the stove.
