I have long lusted after the slate-on-black pottery at Bennington Potters. It has inspired me to change my life and live simply with beautiful things.

bennington.jpgOnly when I was able to afford such things, Bennington took my favorite color out of circulation. My gift when I had my second son was to go to the store on New York’s border and have a personal shopper help me get the last of the black they had on the shelves.

But black is back, in a limited edition sale. I can’t tell you how much joy I will find in spending $100 on this set. Not only am I continuing my collection, but I’m supporting a very good company with causes like women’s shelters and supporting its host city in Vermont.

Oh, and it is all dishwasher safe, stands up to regular use from my kids, and I even put all the dishes in the oven and bake with them. (Imagine tea cups you can bake custard in! I’ve done it. It came out a little runny, but that was my fault, not the dishes’. I had better luck making individual cakes and breads in them.)

They all come with a maker’s mark, they all come with people who answer the phone and will walk through the store to help you shop, and they all come with guarantees for success. This 10-ounce cup and saucer would be nice for onion soup and is $30.

They are beautiful. They just don’t look like home to me.
